GUIDE
Clear Views. Strong Protection. Lasting Performance.
__ ,,
PURPOSE
The fene$tration system-induding
windows, skylights, and their associated
frames, sealants, flashing, and glazing-is
one of the most imponant
components
of the building envelope. It provides natural light, ventilation, weather protection,
and energy efficiency while preventing unwanted water and air infiltration.
In Hawaii's tropical climate, windows and skylights are continually exposed to UV
radiation, wind-driven rain, salt-laden air, humidity, and thermal movement. Routine
inspections help identify developing deficiencies before they lead to moisture
intrusion, glazing failures, corrosion, or premature deterioration.

SYSTEM OVERVIEW
PRIMARY FUNCTION
The fenestration system is designed to:
C, Protect tho building from water intrusion.
C, Resist wind and weat.,., exposure.
C, Provide natural daylight and ventilation.
C, lmp,ove occupant comfort and energy efficiency.
C, Maintain dear visibiftty and ext•rior appear-.

~ INSPECTION FREQUENCY
A PRIMARY THREATS
A Ultraviolet (UV) radiation
A Wind-driven rain
A Salt air and corrosion
A Thermal expansion and contraction
A Sealant deterioration
A Failed gluing seals
A Moisture intrusion
A Biological growth
A Improper drainage
A Deferred maintenance
0 SAFETY FIRST
@ INSPECTION GOAL
Determine whether the fenestration
system continues to protect the building
by identifying developing deficiencies,
documenting observations, and
prioritizing maintenance before
water intrusion or operational
problems occur.
STEWARDHIP PRINCIPLE
Windows should do more than lot
light in-they
should keep water out.
Most window failures begin at
the perimeter, not the glass.
