GUIDE
Protecting
Your Building
from Water-Related
Damage
----
@ PURPOSE
An effective rainwater management system is one of the most
important components of the building envelope. Its purpose is to
collect, control, and safely direct rainwater away from the roof,
exterior walls, foundation, and surrounding landscape.
In Hawaii's dimate, where Intense rainfall events can occur
throughout the year, gutters and downspouts play a critical role in
protecting buildings from moisture intrusion, erosion, premature
coating failure, wood decay, and foundation-related issues.
The purpose of this guide is to help property owners, HOA boards,
property managers, and facility professionals perform a systematic
visual inspection of the entire rainwater management system,
identify developing deficiencies, and prioritize maintenance before
water-related problems occur.

WHAT ARE YOU INSPECTING?
The rainwater management system is designed to collect
rainwater from the roof and safely move it away from the
building.
--
During this inspection,
you are evaluating
whether
water
can travel from the roof to its final discharge
point without
obstruction,
leakage, overflow,
or damage to surrounding
building
components.
